Tire Rotation: Do You Know Why You Should Rotate Your Tires?

Tire rotation is an important aspect of car maintenance. When you rotate the wheels and associated tires on the delivery axis, tire wear becomes uniform. The result is nearly balanced traction force and periodic handling. Most tire warranties require that tire rotation be performed according to a correct mileage schedule. Many tire manufacturers recommend rotation between 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

What is Tire Rotation?

Tire rotation means periodically changing the position of each tire on your car. You should rotate the tires according to the car manufacturer’s recommendations, or every 5,000 miles. For many of you, this will mean when changing your car’s oil.

Regularly rotating your car’s tires gives you a good opportunity to visually check for tire damage, check and adjust air pressure, address any vibrations you may be experiencing, and check tread depth.

Why is Tire Rotation Important?

Not all tires on your car play the same role. For example, in most vehicles, the front tires do most of the steering, while the rear tires follow the front ones. There may also be variation in braking and weight distribution on your car, resulting in uneven pressure on the tires depending on their position. A front-engine car will put more pressure on the front tires, as this is the heaviest part of the car.

Other factors such as poor wheel alignment and unbalanced tires can contribute to a variety of conditions that cause stress more quickly than others, leading to tire expansion. A worn suspension system can negatively affect the weight distribution on the car, increasing wear during braking.

All of this means that tires will wear unevenly. Due to most of the rotation, the front tires wear faster on the edge, while the rear tires wear more evenly. This uneven wear can lead to early tire replacement.

Rotating the tire condition leads to more wear on specific tires than others. Eliminating these irregular wear patterns distributes the load among the four tires and significantly increases tire life.
